Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

"OCD can take many forms. For me it was an endless cycle of fear preventing rituals such as sifting food and drink through my teeth to avoid contaminants, counting endlessly in my head, ordering numbers and letters in my head and the horrible, irrational thoughts about harming myself and others, to mention but a few.

OCD can produce some pretty amazing rituals and compulsions and most sufferers don't realise that their OCD is actually a SYMPTOM of their underlying anxiety and NOT a stand alone disorder. OCD cannot exist without underlying anxiety and it is this which fuels the disorder. Get rid of the anxiety and very quickly, for me it was just a few days, the obsessions and compulsions flow away. This is the case in every single OCD client we have helped, without exception. People who thought they would never be free of their thoughts and behaviours... anxiety and OCD free in days.

Over 130,000 clients stand as testament to our success. All we need is the opportunity to show you how you can do the same." Charles Linden

What is OCD?

OCD is driven by 'what if' thoughts - an anxiety of possible consequences. "If I don't do X, Y will happen!"

Sufferers may experience bouts of OCD, at times of extreme stress or worry, or even constantly through their lives. The pattern of suffering is as varied as the obsessions and compulsions it produces.

Very often, sufferers of OCD will use drugs or alcohol in an attempt to control the anxiety that drives their condition. If the OCD becomes too intrusive, it can cause massive disruptions to behaviours, careers, relationships and the general enjoyment of life.

OCD affects over 6 million sufferers in the US and a similar number in the UK. It is as equally common in men and women and appears normally in childhood or early adulthood. Approximately 1 in 3 OCD sufferers report having developed symptoms during childhood.

OCD Symptoms

OCD symptoms can range from strange or disturbing thoughts to extreme 'ritual' behaviour.

As a sufferer of OCD:

  • Germs or cleanliness might drive you to wash constantly
  • You may feel plagued by doubts about whether you had completed a certain action
  • You may be haunted by thoughts about violence or killing
  • You might count or become obsessed with certain songs or words
  • You might have to arrange and re-arrange things symmetrically or in a certain order
  • You might have sexual thoughts which would otherwise be foreign or disgusting to you
  • You may become obsessively religious or develop other exaggerated belief systems

Obsessions drive the 'rituals' or compulsions which make the sufferer perform these tasks. These rituals and compulsions are intrusive and can make the sufferer feel very isolated and frightened but the fear of not behaving in this way drives the OCD sufferer on.

Most people recognise elements of obsessive behaviour in their own lives. Humans are ritualistic by nature and habits can form very quickly. As long as habit doesn't become invasive or unhealthy, OCD cannot develop.

Sufferers of OCD generally know that what they do is wrong and obsessive, but they are powerless to prevent it. However, some sufferers don't detect anything wrong with their behaviour and it falls on others to inform them that what they do is inappropriate.
